Air FieldTurf Aviation-grade Artificial Turf (AGATâ„¢) design, materials, installation methods and system performance were rigorously evaluated and validated at test locations across North America and the Pacific. The studies, including wind tunnel testing, were administered through the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center. Operational tests were conducted at Boston Logan (BOS/KBOS) using a United Airlines Boeing 757, at San Francisco (SFO/KSFO) using a United Airlines Boeing 747 and a 777, and at Honolulu (HNL/PHNL) using airport rescue and fire-fighting (ARFF/RFFS) vehicles. The results were used to formulate FAA Advisory Circular AC No. 150/5370-15 Airside Applications for Artificial Turf, issued on 29 September 2007.
Groundbreaking independent studies were conducted at U.S. Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar (NKX/KNKX) using C-5 Galaxy and C-130 Hercules heavy transport aircraft as well as the CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter.
Additional (and occasionally redundant) testing was completed in compliance with existing, additional and amended FAA requirements given in the issued AC. Click on the links above to view selected findings.
