Burn Tests
A series of 9 live-fire demonstrations were conducted at the FAA William J Hughes Technical Center ARFF Research Program Fire Test Facility.
Approximately 10 US gals (38 l) of JP-8 military fuel were poured over 35-50% of various test surfaces in a 4 x 8 ft (1.21m x 2.42m) test pan. Tests were conducted outdoors, in full-wind conditions.
The results were similar in all cases. Even with a 16km/h wind blowing, the flame did not spread beyond the fuel-saturated area. More importantly, it did not spread to the fibers that were not in contact with fuel. Exposed turf fibers melted away from the flame allowing the ballast sand infill to act as a buffer, limiting the spread. In addition, the base and sub-base prevented the fuel from flowing away from the original pour areas, effectively containing the simulated fuel spill.
Other flammability testing has been performed by accredited laboratories to ensure that the material does not emit toxic fumes when enflamed.
