Load-bearing Tests
Boston Logan International Airport (BOS/KBOS) served as a test site to determine the impact of heavy airport vehicles on the artificial turf system. In a static test, a 66,000 lb ARFF vehicle was parked on the turf for 10- and 20-minute periods. After the vehicle was moved, the turf was inspected for rutting or problematic areas but none were found.
The turf was then tested during a rainstorm to see how it would respond to an emergency vehicle crossing it repeatedly during inclement weather. The ARFF vehicle was driven across the non-permeable turf while the driver turned the steering wheel to grind the tires into the surface. Even this grueling treatment on the water-saturated surface did not cause the turf to shift or become dislodged or create a FOD hazard.
